Matthew Mason is an American composer and pianist from the Houston area whose music combines a strong command of traditional craft with a distinctive contemporary voice. Mason's works have been performed in a variety of concert settings and have earned recognition for their expressive depth, sonic imagination, and engaging musical narratives. In 2016, he was commissioned to compose the required work for the quadrennial San Antonio International Piano Competition, where his composition received its world premiere by the competition's finalists. More recently, his orchestral work “The Fantastik Adventures of the Kalendar Prince” was selected as winner of the 8th Annual International Composition Competition presented by the Tampa Bay Symphony. Chosen from an international field of submissions, the work was subsequently programmed for the orchestra's 2026 concert season, further establishing Mason as an emerging voice in contemporary American composition.

Drawing inspiration from both the classical tradition and contemporary musical language, Mason's compositions often explore vivid contrasts of color, texture, and atmosphere. As both a composer and performer, he remains dedicated to creating music that is intellectually compelling while maintaining a direct connection with audiences. He studied piano at the University of Houston and the USC Thornton School of Music under the guidance of pianist Antoinette Perry.
